We Won?

Almost 4 months ago I entered a music project that Patron Tequila created. They basically put two songs next to each other and made music fans listen to one verses the other, by putting to artists songs up back to back and let fans choose which was a yes or a no. You had to listen for at least 30 seconds before deciding. This was probably the most legit project/contest I've ever seen. I don't do battle of the bands or voting contests period, but this one couldn't be manipulated and it was purely based on the quality of content and what thousands of music fans felt was the best. 3 bands won out of 5000 entries and we were number 1!

What did we win? A LARGE TOUR PACKAGE: includes but not limited to a fully powered portable PA system with all the extras, cables, stands, etc..(not that we needed our own PA but it's still nice) $400 Hotel Voucher & $200 Gas card. Now, that! is a far better prize than playing some crappy side stage at a major festival in front of no one, don't you agree??

You share our music, you get paid

As mentioned in an earlier post. We have signed with a new digital record label that allows our fans to make money off of sharing our songs.

It's simple:

Sign up (free) on the PDRL website under my pdrl using this link http://members.thepdrl.com/id/mikeborgia (THIS IS NOT A SOCIAL NETWORK)

Using this link, puts you directly connected to us as a fan and part of our family or geneology and acts as a direct referral.

Once your signed up, you now have your own website and have your very own referral link to share with your friends via email, social network etc. Using your own link, will give you the bands commission rate every time one of your friends buys the track or album. Don't be afraid to mention to whom you share, that you get full commission if they buy the album or songs through you.

Why not get paid for something you already do? exactly, you SHOULD!!

If you put a little regular time into this concept of promotion, you will see a pretty nice pay out from it and be helping us reach more fans as well as funding for future releases, tours etc.. We find this much more professional than begging fans for a hand out for your funding campaign.

Mike Borgia signs with new record label!

More than 6 months ago I was approached by a man who said he is starting a record label and was interested in my music. At first I thought, oh no.. here we go again, but after talking with him about it and how his label fits in to the newer digital business models in place these days, I began to ponder the possibility. He basically explained that this would be digital only to start and it would pay your fans for something they already to, which is "share" and buy your music. The difference is, he is carefully selecting artists who are interesting in working together to generate momentum. Quality over quantity, which I love! What's even better is the profit sharing is amazing!

How it works: The artist gets paid for the sale of their songs starting at 30% on the dollar, but if a fan shares your music and one of their friends buys it, then you get the 30% and artist, who you sold someone else to gets 10%. You just have to make sure that you use the member referral link so you get credit for the sale.

The shortest explanation possible.

When you spread the word about an artist, you get paid. Create a free profile at My PDRL. It takes about a minute, maybe two. You now have your own PDRL web site. You will receive a link to your PDRL web site via email, or you can access it in My PDRL once you have signed up. Email that link to your independent music loving friends. Send it to a group of friends on Facebook. Or get creative. Tell them there is cool music here and that they can make some money by promoting their favorite PDRL artists.

If you have 5 friends who buy just one album, and they each show the site to 5 of their friends who buy one album, and that cycle repeats through our matrix, you will have earned $3905.00just for telling people about good music! You probably already do that all the time. A nice side effect of this process is the bands you have supported will have made more money with us than they would have made on the same sales with a traditional label.

I am honored to be a part of this new business model and hope that you all will take the initiative as you have in the past, only this time, you the fan are getting much more back. This economy sucks! so why not??

I have enough songs that I feel are worthy of recording. The lack of fear, is what makes life successful and fulfilled. Even though some don't agree, I'm about to start making one of the best records I've ever done. Are we there yet?

I titled this blog post as "are we there yet?' just to be sarcastic in terms of so much hard work, not just from me, but from everyone trying to make a living in these poor economic times. I've gotten creative with making a living out of music all these years, but it still can be a challenge, knowing that people simply don't have the funds or the courage to spend it if they do!

Everyone wants to be a rock star in some way or another, but that's not humanly possible for us all to be one at the same time. You have to understand that timing, persistence and maintaining integrity, eventually pulls you ahead and into the green. For some its many years and for others, its being fortunate to know the right people early on in the pursuit. Socializing face to face with humans, not virtual online friends, will most definitely get you further than hrs of empty friend requests. We are still human and need interaction in the physical realm.

Since money, as far as I know, doesn't grown on plants and the feds can't just print more, lets pretend for a while that we can be happy with less shall we?

Outbound NYC

Transitions are sometimes necessary and the unlikely jump to another city was the inevitable. I truly love this change and with it comes sacrifices and starting over... sort of. I can't say its completely like starting over, but very close. I'm ramping up for some very fun and exciting shows in the coming months. I'm now finishing up songs to begin recording another record for 2012 that I am quite proud of. I'll have a new band and some surprises along the way. Life just keeps getting better when you don't have to quit doing what you love!

I am forever thankful not only for the success of the summer tour,but for those who supported me in their own way. It's never unrecognized, so thank you all.

As we wind up for summer, you'll notice mother nature being a bitch and throwing us some uncompromising weather. This does not change the momentum of planning the summer now does it? indeed not! Opening the floodgates

This Spring has been a whirlwind of changes to the necessary power. It's also been an incredible life altering change that puts a giant smile on my face. I know what you are all thinking, oh it's probably just another new song or advancement in his career that he needs to brag about. Partially that is correct, but to not bore you with too much bragging, I have to say thank you again for the success of this record so far. It has been another piece to carry with you when I pass and hopefully a timeless one at that.

I want to share some thoughts in regards to life and the attitude people portray toward their own. Generally I think people are optimistic and forward thinking, but in truth I find the opposite. Most people pretend they are happy in hopes things will change or become what they desire with time. That can hold true in some aspects, but the best way for that to happen is to surround yourself with like minded, positive people, who genuinely love you for you. Can anyone truly change? not really, although they can change certain habits or behaviors, but overall they are who they are and that should either be embraced or let go, not forced into something it is not.

There is a time when people struggle to find happiness and think the older they get the harder it becomes. Timing and understanding of how to connect with the right people is very important I believe. Music connects people in various ways to the events in their lives. Either fond memories or shameful ones. At this point I think personally I have reached that moment where clarity & happiness have made it to the surface. I can purely and shamelessly say that my wounds have healed and I think I'm very close to having what I need. They say, once you reach that point, of "oneness" that you no longer become inspired and have trouble writing songs. in this case I am even more inspired to write then ever before. I only hope that the people I left behind, get what makes them happy and whole in the purest way.
In the near future, you are going to hear some fresh new songs that are a part of this inspiration.

You work hard and then even harder to find minimal reward. Does it mean you give up? no not really, it just means if you still have the heart, you press on and eventually new aspects of growth take shape. I'm always working on something to keep the spirit alive.
Firstly, I must add that our new single "BRICKS" is in literally hundreds of Jukeboxes across the country. You can search your area by going here FIND BRICKS. I find it very exciting, so please, if you find our song go ahead and play it.

Next as we spoke of before; our new CD, printed in Audio magazine format, is being shipped as we speak and WOW! it's visually impressive and sounds great! Our release date is FEB 11th. @ Rockwood Music hall in NYC. A tour is in the works for spring and hopefully back to the UK we go. For those out of town, if you have ideas for a show let us know.

"Bricks" now in your local Jukebox!

As you know, we have released the new single "Bricks" from our soon to be released E.P "Live or die, you won't be lonely" As the buzz builds, so do the opportunities. We have witnessed with great pleasure, our song in over 1600 Jukeboxes across the states, thanks to a new music service called MUSICATI. They have gratuitously offered us this distribution platform and believe in what we do, as we do them.

Why fans don't buy your music.

The answer to why fans don't buy your music is simple. You either write poorly crafted, uninspiring songs or you simply give too much of yourself away, allowing fans to expect free stuff all the time. Free songs are ok as long as you use them as incentive for purchases already made, you dig? Another big reason why new fans are hard to find for indie artists, is because of websites like myspace, who allow for anyone to have virtual music and have access to web bots that flood the users inbox with "listen to me requests" Ok, so its not just myspace that have jaded the music listener, but it is one example.

The best way to reach new fans and my personal favorite, is to socialize with the real world offline. GO to shows, parties, special events. Talk to as many people as you can. Act like you have genuine interest in what they do and when asked what you do, then tell them you are a musician, but try to make it interesting because at least in NYC, everyone is in a fucking band! Above all, never stop working for yourself.

Last but certainly not least, start writing quality, well crafted songs. Pay attention to how your favorite artists craft a song. Don't get too close to your music and get stuck in your self indulgent bubble thinking your music is the shit and people will just get it. Would it hurt to actually ask average music lovers what they like? and where their favorite place is to find new music?

UK Tour update

As many of you already know, the tour was cut short due to lack of entry clearance data. British Immigration has been cracking down on musicians who travel to the UK. Regardless of whether or not they are coming over to work or just play, you are now required to have a Visa to gain entry. Of all the years of traveling to their fine country I have never needed anything but a valid US passport, however at the end of 2007 I over stayed, not by my own choice but let's just say I was misinformed. When I was sent home in 2007 they said I could return, but I simply had to leave at that time as my 6 month US clearance had expired.
Prior to organizing this tour with my band, I had consulted with the UK Embassy here in New York City to make sure I had the proper documents to enter. I was misinformed once again and when I reached the UK border, i was denied entry.
Don't get me wrong, the Immigration officers act like a bunch of bullies because they could have allowed me through as I'm no criminal and had a return ticket. For years I have been in good standing, but now since the economy sucks, the UK are concerned about US citizens and immigrants having too much access to public funds. In addition, many are coming over sick and seeking emergency care and having access to the health care we struggle to afford in the US.
My question is, even though immigration considers me a commercial artist, what separates the decision of whether I'm coming over for vacation or to play music? They didn't research to see if I had any venues booked. I simply said I was on vacation.
The bottom line is, the Embassy needs to have tighter communication with the border in the UK, so next time I travel or anyone for that matter travels, they have accurate information to gain entry clearance.
I learned a great deal about the laws and rules that frequently change on a case by case basis. All I can do is, be a man about it and hope that getting a Visa and not just a valid passport will work. Although I have read and heard about a large number of musicians getting rejected applying for a Visa or denied entry with a Visa.
Our world is currently fucking messed up!

New single released this week!

Typically a band puts out a record and shoots out the whole album, telling everyone to listen to one particular single, then the rest of the songs get lost because you served too much to an already over stimulated music fan society. it appears to work more naturally to focus on releasing one song at a time, until all the songs get a fair shot and allows the listener to take time to sit and absorb, correct? This is how I feel and require this personally.

Hi! as you know we are releasing one single at a time from our new EP "Live or die, you won't be lonely" in the process of that, we are gathering some extra material to add to the hard copies, so for those who prefer something tangable, we will have special limited pressings available in the fall.

We have been doing a steady number of shows mostly in the NY area for now, but will continue to update you on an offical tour as well as our trip to the UK that is tentatively slated for Oct. 2010.

Tread reunites!

My former rock band TREAD reunited after 10 yrs to relive the old memories and was it worth it? hell yes! We kicked it off in Syracuse NY @ Mac's Bad Art Bar. It still feels good and relevant to play those songs. The energy and performance was spot on; even Better than before. Thanks again so much to all the old fans and friends who attended and supported the night. It was magical. We have plans to do more shows in the future around the region, so we hope that our old fans still remember us.

I remember the days when you had to be hand selected to get your music into itunes and now literally anyone can pay to be distributed to the major digital sales platforms. It’s not special anymore. What I’m getting at is, what are the odds of someone finding your music on any of the major digital sites and making a random purchase to you, whom they never heard of? The odds are unlikely. Why do so many indie artists feel they need to sell on itunes etc.. for their music to be official? Doesn’t it make sense to say if you have a true fan, that they would want to buy directly from the artist? Yes it does. None of those major distributors are doing anything to promote your releases on their site, unless of course its paid, you are signed and the label is paying for promo slots, or you are popular enough to reach high sales rankings. In the event you are selling high units, the worst decision you can make is give the larger cut to a corporation that does nothing.

It makes no sense for an independent artist to sell any other way than direct. Trust me, I’ve been writing and releasing records for almost 20 yrs. and the one thing I’ve learned is that true fans are willing to give you their hard earned cash for your musical products over a share to corporate companies. You have no real way of tracking online sales through itunes, amazon, rhapsody etc. To this day I still sell more records and downloads through touring and mailing list interaction than any other way. directly through my dot com I offer direct digital sales and before I had this logical epiphany, I thought itunes was the way to go. I’m not saying avoid other outlets completely, as any residual sales are helpful, but unless these companies are doing something to promote my releases from the sales commission they take, why should you bother? The answer is, you shouldn’t.

millions and millions of people use paypal.com. If you are an independent artist, it’s wise to set up an account. Artists who are unaware about this, aren’t ready to distribute your work yet.

Bandcamp.com- allowers users to purchase digital and hard copies of your work in almost any format. slick easy to use and highly trackable data. Everything you need in simple form is here.

Reverbnation.com- Has viral and highly useful web marketing tools and widgets to increase revenue and manage your fans. Their interface is very detailed and not for beginners, but offers incredible incentives, like revenue sharing from their advertisers, special opportunities, industry advice, amazing web store with direct purchase interface.

The Psychology of FREE ( or why I won't pay for a song)

One of the biggest misconceptions about pricing is the notion that people base most buying decisions on rational economic calculations. The truth is that they’re based far more on psychology most of the time.

There’s several ways to look at this. One is from a value standpoint. Most people would probably rather pay $4.50 for a cup of coffee at some run-of-the-mill coffee shop than accept a free cup. A free cup of coffee is probably a stale cup of coffee at most places. In general, people assign lower value to things that are free.

Take something as seemingly simple as a $10 magazine subscription. There’s a psychological chess match behind that price. If you observe the magazine industry carefully, you’ll notice that most consumer magazines that charge a yearly subscription fee tend to charge right around $10. But it costs more than $10 to get 12 issues to your mailbox. The cost of printing and mailing 12 issues to your mailbox is about $15. And when you factor in the cost of acquiring you as a subscriber, it’s about $30. But magazines make up most of that cost through advertising anyway. Many of them make such a large proportion of their money through ads that they might as well give the issues away for free. This is where we get into the realm of psychology.

$10 isn’t just $10. It’s also a psychological compromise. It’s meant to please two different audiences: advertisers and consumers. Someone who’s paid for a subscription is far more valuable to an advertiser than someone who gets free magazines because the act of pulling out your credit card and paying means that you want it. A paying customer makes an emotional investment that’s going to make him pay closer attention to what’s inside the magazine (including the ads) than the person who gets it for free.

But why pay at all? Isn’t free better? Well, not exactly. As I alluded to earlier, the human brain is hardwired to assign value to things that cost something. The simple reason for that is that a price signals that the product was difficult enough to make that the person who made it at least wanted to recoup the cost involved in making it. Things that are hard to make tend to be better designed and more intricate than things that are easy to make because they require a unique combination of skill and dedication; both relatively rare qualities in the real world. $10 seems to be the price point where consumers think that the product has value but isn’t too expensive and where advertisers think it’s not too low to devalue the product.

The price=value equation holds steady in the real world of atoms. But the cyberworld is where things get weird. The psychology there takes a strange turn. What if I started charging you $5 to read my articles? You definitely wouldn’t read them. Ok, what if I charged a penny to read them? You still wouldn’t read them.

Economically, a penny is a tiny investment. But psychologically, a penny means much more. Any price at all will stop most people dead in their tracks because of what George Washington University economist Nick Szabo calls ‘mental transaction costs”. It’s simply the cost of thinking. If given a choice, most people would rather not think than think because thinking requires energy and concentration. It’s hard. The economic implications of that are huge. When you introduce a price to something, you make people have to think “Is this worth paying for?”

The thing about the Internet is that there’s such an abundance of information and media and it’s so easy to get from one place to another that most people don’t think it’s worth their time and mental energy to think about whether something is worth paying for unless it’s clearly worth paying for. They can just move on to something else in a second.

In general, it has been easier to get people to pay for music online than written content. But the fact is that the vast majority of music isn’t good or unique enough to overcome people’s aversion to thinking “Is this worth paying for?” However, the greater enemy is just sheer abundance. There’s so much other stuff competing for people’s time online. We usually don’t expect to devote enough time or mental energy to convince ourselves that things are worth paying for.

Recommendations from trusted or familiar people on social networks and blogs helps, but the kind of systemic filtering that the record labels traditionally provided still isn’t there. It’s likely that most of the money in music will always be made in the real world because the perception of value there is high enough to overcome people’s mental transactional cost thinking.

An extension of this whole idea is in the area of online buzz. It’s not nearly as valuable as people think it is. A band that gets a ton of plays on YouTube won’t necessarily translate that into real money. It’s not necessarily due to lack of effort on the band’s part. It has more to do with the fact that from a viewer’s standpoint, the cost of viewing a video, hitting the “Like” button or posting a link on Twitter is extremely low. Viewing a video doesn’t make you a fan. The cost of attending that band’s concert, on the other hand, is much higher and meaningful. Not only does a fan have to pay money ,but he has to plan, which requires mental effort. And then he has to physically get himself there which involves a lot more than meets the eye. All of these events have time and space implications which aren’t nearly as significant online.

I’m not saying that online buzz isn’t useful. It’s truly replacing radio as a gauge of popularity. But I am saying that the ultimate measure of success should always be whether someone is willing to pay money for something; not because you want to get rich, but because a payment is one of the purest forms of endorsement. When people pay for something, they’re giving away much more than money. It’s all the things they had to go through to get that money, from dealing with the asshole boss day after day to the all-nighters they had to pull in college to get the degree to get that good job. That’s why money is always an emotional topic. So a payment should always be the ultimate endorsement.

Young bands -equals "easy target"

I find that there are a large amount of companies out there that cater to the indie artist on the upstart. Some I find legitimate, honest and truly useful and others I can tell you point blank are a little shady and take advantage of the ignorance of bands not knowing what to do. Here is my list of good and bad that I have had experience with and these are just my top few.

Good:
Reverbnation.com - series of usefully/viral online tools to promote and present yourself on a more professional level. They work on band equity, so the more you use the service, the more you gain traffic to your site and become more approachable to sponsors.

Grooveshark.com- an online radio play list with several million listeners that allows artists to upload music to be included in their enormous database and offers affordable and highly targeted song promotion to help you actually gain real listeners much more affective than Jango.

Bad:
Sonicbids.com- They claim they can get you gigs buy using their super cheesy online press kits, but what they truly do is partner with promoters who pre-select most of the talent and use it to generate income from submissions to fund their event. No real success stories of artists blowing up from using sonic bids, that I can find or ever heard of.

Music submit.com - You pay for them to send your music and press releases to online sources that hold no real significance and they take anyone big or small. there is no screening process which is not a good sign. They are great with taking your money though.

Dead Rock stars

I don't feel sorry for a lot of the dead rock stars out there, including Pete Steele. Why should I feel sorry for people who don't give a shit about their lives and piss it away on drugs and stupid shit. In and out of rehab etc... Most of these stars are grown men who should know their limits. People have issues that aren't always easy to work out and detach from and not every situation is the same; but, what a way to go out in this world. It's so shameful and weak. There is no denying the talent of the legends like Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Jeff Buckley-- to name a few, but on the personal side, is life really that bad when you have financial security and millions of fans adoring you?
My guess is no! Every one has issues to work through and that is understandable. Some have addictive personalities and grew up having to supress who they are. We can go on and on with the varying reasons as to why people destroy themselves, but my point is more personal opinion and should be taken subjectively.

Slaying in Boston MA

It has been far too long since my last trip to Boston to entertain. I'm looking forward to making new friends and converting music fans into believers of my art. There are loads of new things popping up in my creative world. I can only hope we get half of what has come our way and we can brag to all of you on the accomplishments. Life still has many worthy values, that with a hint of optimism and less cynicism, will truly reveal a rewarding experience. it's happening now and it's about f'n time!

Myself and the Problems have been hard at work preparing songs for a new record that we are truly floored over. have I told you that already? I can't remember. I am just trying to do my duty as a musician with fans to get the word out.

I'll keep blogging and next time hopefully I can write about more interesting stuff, but for now, just be cool and deal with my rants about musical news.

Money + Ethics= bullshit

have you ever wondered why our government and economy is in such a mess? I'm certain we all know the basics or think we know at least. All I can think about is what loads of money can do to a human being. The power it contains in the wrong hands. Do you believe our governments are truly looking out for the common people who contribute their tax dollars each year? How would you behave if you were given such control over our worlds decisions and had a big paycheck every year? We all think that we would do the most ethical and responsible things to help everyone in need, because you yourself were once in that position and understand what it's like. I can't help but believe that this is only partially true. We are a society of greed and with that notion makes me believe that any of us could behave the way our leaders have if given the same power. Humanity is sick and so used to having everything we want but nothing we truly need.

IF given the kind of money and power our leaders have, would you say fuck everyone else and just worry about your own family?
or
Would you think about the people who contribute a lot to society and work in unity to make the world a better place for all?

Just be willing to admit that possibly, your behavior would change focus toward family and your personal needs, over the people as a whole.

Auditions and consumption of personal rants.

So we had an audition today for a major television show. it was a fun experience, but the casting directors and judges surely don't make things easy. The feedback was good, but the wait for the results can be nerve racking. I broke a string when asked to play more, but kept playing through without blinking an eye! I suppose we should just put it behind us and if in a few weeks we get the call, it's fine with us. TO be grateful for the life and talents you are given is good practice. I feel grateful but a little jaded at times. So many less talented individuals make it through life with everything handed to them. I wish I had the one big break that lifts things up past that glass ceiling, that I have been pressed against for many years now.
The one break that would not only make my musical career more stable, but would also allow me to see my son a lot more than I'm able, due to uncontrollable circumstances. Here are some photos of my newest life inspiration.

It's a cyclical story of me just trying to book more gigs, record a new album and make my way through the music business. Atlanta and the southern trip was amazing, so that should bring me back in the next few months with the full band. Aside from another local NYC gig @ Bowery Poetry Club on march 26th, I've entered this silly contest to play the Warped Tour this year. I played it in 2008 without entering a dumb contest and it was quite an experience on the Kevin Says stage. Loads! of People!

I have reached the finish for my share of the Microsoft Windows 7 promotional campaign. it was an honor to know someone big cares about what I do. I am certain there will be more opps in the coming months and looking forward to that! The Holiday is so close and on a personal level, it won't be as fulfilling as last year, but I will still have one important person to highly look forward to spending it with. Sometimes the harder you work, the harder you fall. This is true in many cases though more times than not, hard work pays off. There really is no telling when anyone will get their big break, but when it happens you will know. I think I have made a hell of a run so far, but I need to break that glass ceiling! Money comes trickling in from many angles to keep me going and a good portion from music alone. Music is my labor of love, like sex is for a hooker only mine is legal :)

Recently I've become tremendously spread thin on where I will start my tour in the coming year. I've been asked by fans from Atlanta to London as to when i will return. I can't say conclusively when, but with your help I can figure out where to start. The Uk is always a priority as it is what brings me the most love and respect for what I do, yet lately the US has been giving me many shouts to come to more cities than I an feasibly handle right now. Feel free to email me your thoughts and ideas on when and where this should all happen.

What's The Point?

With mainly just myself doing multiple tasks, it's sometimes difficult to alarm everyone of what needs special attention. You have all been supportive in various ways and for that I'm forever grateful. I know it's overwhelming especially with so many bands out there, but I assure you that 80% of those bands aren't going to be around very long anyway. As a listener and fan of music myself I tend to stick with the artists who sustain themselves for years to come :) There is nothing more frustrating then to connect with a band that only makes it through one album and a few decent songs.
Motivation! how do we all find it in this poor economy? I have my methods, but I'm not in the mood to get too deep on you right now. There is still money to be had, so don't give up seeking it. Be creative and open to new possibilities. Do not stop spending your hard earned cash! You cannot take your money with you when you die. Your parents will tell you to think about when you want to retire, but you may not get to live your old age, so I truly don't see much point in working to save for "when you reach senior status. Right now in our youth is what matters and making life count, while were are healthy and young enough to enjoy quality experiences and success.
I will post more on this soon, but for the time being, just try and live for the day, manage your time,eat,sleep and exercise well. The point is live for what we have now, not what we could potentially have years down the road. It's called progress and what you do each day is what will count for the future.

There is this idea in musicians heads, that in order to gain notoriety with music fans, they need to give shit away for free. Everyone has their opinions on this concept, but mine is clearly bias. I have sustained my career as a musician from obtaining value with my art. If its quality and people connect with it, they will buy it.
major artists like "Prince" or Radiohead for instance, have cultivated a very large fanbase, therefore have the ability to give away an album at their concerts because people are paying good money to see them live.
This does not work for indie or unsigned bands, unless you have that type of fame. The marketing for unsigned bands is far different.

We live in a digital age where anyone can STREAM your music for free online. Fans can come back everyday to your site to listen. That to me is as free as it needs to be. If they chose to own it, then a transaction must take place like the clothing or shoes you buy. Occasionally, its acceptable for artists to give away something to their loyal following, who have contributed to attending their shows, buying their merch etc.. or completing a task of telling their friends.

Finally, don't think because you have a myspace page that you are going to get famous by spamming people to hear your first attempts at writing music. If you have true talent and have spent enough time shaping it up, the believability and quality in what you do will shine through.

There must be true value established with the blood, sweat, and tears you put into creating your art. You must love what you do first and foremost, but if you are in this for a career, then it is a business as well and you should treat it as such.

Shame on sites like myspace who diluted and flooded the web with nonsense.

So hear we are rolling the dice, trying new things, touring when possible in this terrible economic downturn. Its all fine and good because I've spent the last 18 yrs. being a musician and reaching success at various levels. I have the fans to thank for my ability to sustain for this long. I'm working on a new album, plus a slew of other musical projects with various people. Lots of variety coming this year and it's all been worth it.
I wish the money was coming in more steadily because i would love nothing more than to visit my fans in the UK. I miss them dearly! it will happen, just not sure when.
I'm working on proper video footage that is long overdue! No more of just me in my home. You will soon see some real impressive live footage of what I'm best at.

NEED AN UPDATE? here it is. My life is always filled with musical accomplishments as most of you know. My creativity comes from moments in life that are either taxing or simply inspiring to write about good or bad.
quick thought:
Not everyone knows this but I have a son that was born Feb 16, 2008. His name is Lyric Michael Borgia. I admit at the time, I was scared. I thought it would ruin by musical career and force me into dull and vacuous domestication, but once you experience a life that was created by you, it makes it impossible to neglect. Your life changes for the better and you work out a different plan to continue your career and make a child happy at the same time. So for all the new mothers and fathers out there, don't sweat it! it's not what you think, unless you allow yourself to fall into the stereotype that is.

more music news: I've recorded a lot of albums over the years, some see the light of day and some sit in the archives hoping someday they will surface and grace your Mike Borgia play lists. My 8th studio album is under way and all i can tell you is, its the most important record of my career; not only for the songs themselves but the content and reasons why they were written. I've been inspired to write by the chain of events happening in 2009 than ever before. I won't be negative here, I'll just say some of it has to do with my son being taken from me, which is definitely a difficult situation. The other reason involves finding genuine love and compassion from someone who has become my core inspiration. Now you know how to receive what's about to come yes?

Finally but not least, My dream to become a music producer is taking shape on a more consistent level. This year is full of projects that I feel are very exciting on many levels. Some are challenging while others just come together with content. It's all very rewarding and the results will be worth it. Happiness has consumed my life and I'm ready to embrace it!

Love & hate from 2008

It was a love and hate concept regarding our lives when 2008 became the demise of a stable economy. We are in wonder of what will be our next step. I myself like to stay positive, create what I love, that of which being music and find new ways to get fed. If you have stories to share about how you are transitioning and what methods you use to cope and get through, by all means contribute your thoughts.

It's a new year and 2009 seems even more challenging, yet I can't help but be happy and be grateful I wake up healthy every day, doing what I love. "Music" it's all around us, but we have to relearn the value of it, buy it, and understand the difference between good and badly executed.

Who would have thought we would ever make it through 2008? I feel like I barely made it and 2009 may be of little difference if this economic state continues. I am lucky however to have people still buying my music and coming to shows when I can afford to tour. Keep your head up as optimism is the only way. "Lyric & The Hunter" will put people back into the feeling that we can all share. THe first single is almost under way called "Always Wrong" and super catchy!

So the Holidays are approaching and I wish you all a fair and merry one. Its been a hell of a year hasn't it? You have been with me for a long time through thick and thin so thank you all very much. Now for the skinny: my new music venture "Lyric & The Hunter" is shaping up and will be ready for sample streaming before it hits stores in 09!! We have a special concept that will help stimulate the economy for everyone involved in supporting Lyric & The Hunter. The details will surface as time permits. I will be back on the road next year and playing a handful of US dates throughout the yr as well. I've written so many songs and many still have not yet seen the light of day, some old and many new. You will have your ears full in 2009 with a new solo record, plus a special session CD of songs I wrote with members of TRIG.com amazing songs and all very different across the board. I won't bore you with too many new things so i'll conclude this blog for now and keep the important stuff coming as it gets closer. in the meantime here is a little link to a site that lets you have your say on stuff you love or hate. it's lots of fun! In this challenging economy we as artists are faced with having to beat the hesitation for people to spend money. I'm always able to do that in the most affordable way, at least I think so! Apple threatens to shut down iTunes!

Apple did indeed say that if it couldn't make a profit, it "most likely" will not continue to operate iTunes.

Fortune magazine published a bombshell of a story on Tuesday by reporting that Apple once threatened to close iTunes if forced to pay more for music royalties. A more careful reading of the statement from an Apple executive shows that it was more of a veiled threat. Regardless, it's possible Apple could shut down iTunes.

But is it likely? No. Here's why:

First, the comment was made by Eddy Cue, vice president in charge of Apple's iTunes Store, in a written statement to the Copyright Royalty Board sometime before April 2007. The CRB is a three-judge panel that determines rates for statutory copyright licenses. On Thursday, the CRB is supposed to rule on a proposal by the National Music Publishers' Association to make download stores pay more for the songs they sell. The publishers want an increase from 9 cents a track to 15 cents, a 66-percent jump.

Representatives from the NMPA could not be reached.
